Fitness, Health, & Distance Learning

What an interesting spring it has been! The Shelter in Place order has made for a different pace of life for all of us. As we began distance learning in March the challenge of keeping students motivated and moving for health and fitness seemed daunting, but our students have risen to the challenge!

Thank you, parents, for your support in setting up technology needs and encouraging your kids to exercise. We recognize that this may not have been easy given other work meetings and obligations which you had. Many of you shared that you were beginning to exercise as a family and were trying new things. Good for you! This is a wonderful example for your kids for a lifetime of health and fitness.

Below are a sampling of the health and fitness activities and challenges presented to SJCS students (keep scrolling to find out how you can keep it going this summer!):

Kindergarten - 2nd Grade
  • GoNoodle & YoutTube exercise videos
3rd - 5th Grade
  • Total body workout sets combining strength, core, and cardio

  • Build your own obstacle course

  • Video lessons on coordination, agility, and how germs spread
6th - 8th Grade
  • Total body workout sets combining strength, core, and cardio

  • Build your own obstacle course

  • 7 Days of Sweat Workout Challenge

  • Video lessons on the facts of coronavirus, finding your heart rate and defining your target heart rate zone for fitness building

  • Creating a fitness log to record fitness workouts (personal choice) with the goal of maintaining target heart rate for at least 20 minutes.  Fitness logs also included reflections on how to improve.

Special thanks to the middle school students and families who shared photos from their activities last week. Our families are walking, biking, hiking, and some are even training for a half-marathon! Go Tigers! Take a look:
