SJCS Middle School: "Equipping students for responsible discipleship in Jesus Christ."

The emphasis for San Jose Christian Middle School students is on learning to take responsibility for self as they relate to others and the world around them as image bearers of God. This emphasis is designed specifically for the student who is changing from childhood into adolescence.

The program is designed to provide a smooth transition from the elementary to the secondary school years as well as a gradual change from dependence to independence. The focus of middle school education is to provide students with a variety of exposures and experiences as they learn to see God revealed in all of creation.

Elements of our Middle School Program

1. Our program provides a planned transition from elementary school to high school. Meaningful interaction between teacher and student is maintained while giving increased freedom and independence to the student.

2. Our teachers work closely to stress the development of the whole child and enhance each student's academic, social, emotional, physical, and spiritual growth. Each student will be well known on a personal level by at least one adult in the school.

3. Our students must see that all of learning is inter-related. To that end teachers reflect, plan, and collaborate based on student needs as well as teacher strengths.

4. Our curriculum has three inter-related components based on Biblical principles.

a. The curriculum provides a strong, focused academic program.

b. The curriculum teaches students how to study, do research, explore, be organized, and learn. Emphasis is placed on how and where to find information from books and other media.

c. The curriculum includes opportunities for exploration in other areas of interest to adolescent students. Students are encouraged to study a variety of subjects or topics and look at areas outside the basic course of study. We provide experiences which help students identify their interest areas and aptitudes.

5. Our instructional program provides opportunity for student to student instruction. Students work in learning groups to solve math problems, complete science experiments, work on projects, etc.

6. Our program provides opportunities for students to interact in group activities to foster social development, develop leadership, and learn cooperation. Social experiences help students learn to understand and control their emotions while working in a group.

7. Our students have opportunities for involvement in community projects which include both on campus and off campus experiences.
