SJCS Curriculum by Grade
Jr. Kindergarten
Junior Kindergarten students begin learning the alphabet and numbers and developing listening skills and fine/gross motor skills. Jr. K students are also instructed and encouraged to develop social and decision making skills. These students are characterized by excitement at discovering God’s world. All curriculum and instruction are based on Biblical principles.

CURRICULUM OVERVIEW
Bible- God’s Family. (Christian Schools International)
Jr. K students learn about the Bible primarily through daily stories and memory verses. Students learn that God is present in every aspect of their lives by studying the stories of God’s people, his family, from creation to the birth of Jesus. Also highlighted are specific teachings and miracles of Jesus as well as his death and resurrection.
Math- Math K- An Incremental Development. (Saxon)
Jr.Kindergarten math explores basic math skills. Each lesson provides hands-on experience with, and discussion about, numbers, through topics such as calendar, patterning, classifying, number operations, measurement, and graphing.
Language- Saxon Early Learning. (Saxon)
Students learn listening skills, expanded vocabulary, and learn to express themselves verbally. Students learn letter recognition, phonological awareness, and early word recognition. They develop an understanding of the basic skills of reading, and an appreciation of literature read to them.
Phonics- Saxon Early Learning. (Saxon)
One of our goals is to help children develop their ability to communicate. We focus on the development of oral language skills and an awareness of the relationship between oral and written communication. They will understand that sounds of the letters when paired with others make up words.
Reading- Saxon Early Learning – Literature Collection. (Saxon)
Throughout the year students work on learning the basic skills of reading by listening to stories, poems and verse, learning how to rhyme words, learning beginning sounds of words, and each letter sound.
Science- Saxon Early Learning. (Saxon)
Students use science with simple tools to learn about themselves and Creation. They have opportunities to observe and compare, organize and relay that information to others. They study life science of living things in life-cycles and habitats, physical science doing experiments using magnification, measurement of materials, recycling and environmental stewardship, and earth science, studying the solar system, properties of air, geology, topography of the earth, magnetism.
Health- Saxon Early Learning. (Saxon)
In Jr. Kindergarten personal cleanliness and healthy habits are encouraged, keeping clean face and teeth, hand washing, getting sleep, and eating healthy food are ideas presented in books, activities, science videos, and classroom visits by health professionals. Also themes on protection and emergency services, and other community helpers will be covered.
Second Step- Committee for Children
The Second Step and Steps to Respect curriculum introduce personal safety in public places, safe behavior among strangers, in the neighborhood, and at home. The lessons open dialogue in the classroom about respectful and Godly behavior among students in the classroom and on the playground, self-control of emotions, group and individual behavior development, co-operation, sharing, and self-direction.
Integrated Areas-
Music is part of the daily routine in Jr. K. Students spend time learning rhythms, listening to music, playing with instruments, and singing songs. The children are taught that music is an excellent way to praise and worship God.
Jr. Kindergartners also praise God by developing their creative abilities through activities which include finger painting, easel painting, Play-Doh, cutting, gluing, drawing, and coloring. |
